Os seus efeitos podem ser devastadores com taxas de mortalidade acima de 90%. Em 1987, o v\u00edrus entrou na Europa (Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica) e persistiu por pelo menos quatro anos antes de se espalhar para Marrocos. Este projeto foi concebido para combater a amea\u00e7a para a ind\u00fastria pecu\u00e1ria europeia. Os resultados mostraram que os v\u00edrus sobrevivem por longos per\u00edodos a baixa temperatura (menos de 10\u00ba C) em vetores cuja vida \u00fatil \u00e9 prolongada nessas temperaturas. Modelos matem\u00e1ticos foram desenvolvidos para abordar aspetos da epidemiologia da peste equina. O projeto envolveu duas abordagens principais. O primeiro era desenvolver novos e aprimorados testes para o diagn\u00f3stico da peste equina africana para detectar casos &#8220;precoces&#8221; da doen\u00e7a. O segundo foi fornecer informa\u00e7\u00f5es detalhadas sobre os vetores Culic\u00f3ides do v\u00edrus AHS na Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica em termos das esp\u00e9cies envolvidas, sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o, densidades populacionais, taxas de sobreviv\u00eancia, incid\u00eancia sazonal e capacidade do vetor em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas prevalecentes. A partir dessas informa\u00e7\u00f5es, foram desenvolvidos modelos para avaliar o risco de AHS com base nas condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas. Os principais objetivos foram identificar os principais insetos vetores e fornecer informa\u00e7\u00f5es detalhadas sobre a sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o, incid\u00eancia sazonal e densidades populacionais; esclarecer o papel dos equinos vacinados e n\u00e3o equinos na manuten\u00e7\u00e3o do v\u00edrus; avaliar a estabilidade da vacina contra o v\u00edrus da peste su\u00edna africana em uso no Marrocos; investigar as condi\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais (particularmente temperatura) necess\u00e1rias para que a virg\u00eanese do AHSV ocorra em vetores de insetos e desenvolver modelos epidemiol\u00f3gicos apropriados para a doen\u00e7a equina africana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: var(--wp--typography--line-height, --global--line-height-body);\">As principais conclus\u00f5es s\u00e3o que&nbsp;<em>Culicoides imicola<\/em>&nbsp;\u00e9 muito difundida em Marrocos e \u00e9 provavelmente o \u00fanico vetor importante de AHSV. Um modelo de simula\u00e7\u00e3o foi desenvolvido para investigar quais fatores afetam a probabilidade de uma epizootia ap\u00f3s a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o de AHSV em uma \u00e1rea. Previu-se que as epizootias ser\u00e3o mais prov\u00e1veis de ocorrer no final do ver\u00e3o ou outono e que, se medidas de controle n\u00e3o fossem tomadas, a maioria dos cavalos se infetaria com o v\u00edrus ap\u00f3s a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o. O modelo tamb\u00e9m previu uma preval\u00eancia muito baixa de mosquitos infetados, mesmo no pico de uma epizootia. O tamanho da popula\u00e7\u00e3o de mosquitos, a taxa de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o em cavalos e a \u00e9poca do ano em que o v\u00edrus foi introduzido foram os fatores mais importantes para determinar se ocorre ou n\u00e3o uma epizootia de AHS. No que diz respeito \u00e0s estrat\u00e9gias de vacina\u00e7\u00e3o, proteger os burros, bem como os cavalos, aumentou significativamente a efic\u00e1cia da vacina\u00e7\u00e3o. A prote\u00e7\u00e3o ap\u00f3s a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o do v\u00edrus raramente tinha sucesso na preven\u00e7\u00e3o de surtos, embora reduzisse sua gravidade. Equinos que n\u00e3o s\u00e3o cavalos podem desenvolver uma viremia que pode se estender muito al\u00e9m da dura\u00e7\u00e3o esperada em cavalos. Hoje, o BTV est\u00e1 presente em grande parte do sudeste da Europa. Este projeto combinou tecnologias novas e estabelecidas, incluindo estudos de campo, imagens de sat\u00e9lite, modelagem e mapeamento GIS e o desenvolvimento de marcadores nucleares de \u00edntron \/ mtDNA para vetores. Os resultados permitiram identificar as \u00e1reas de risco da UE e dos pa\u00edses vizinhos, o n\u00edvel de risco e os anos em que as epizootias s\u00e3o mais prov\u00e1veis. Al\u00e9m disso, foram identificadas as regi\u00f5es para as quais os surtos podem se espalhar ou s\u00e3o consideradas livres de risco agora e no futuro.
